Bringing new life to the 40’s Stark facilities and transforming it into the highly anticipated Avengers Campus opening this summer in Paris not only involves repurposing industrial-era buildings and developing new technologies. Vegetation also has its own starring role!
The “green plan” for the Campus is rooted in its creative concept, since landscaping has been a key priority of the creative team from Day One. Creating an environment that will keep recruits focused on their mission was central to making them feel empowered and ready to jump into action alongside Earth’ Mightiest Heroes. And to achieve this, bringing balance between the architecture and the landscaping was essential.
To meet this challenge, the teams called on Marc Boulanger, Landscaping Superintendent at Walt Disney Imagineering Paris, and entrusted him with a twofold mission: to create two “green poles” – one at the entrance and the other in the center of the Campus, in order to combat heat islands; and to participate in the unique storytelling of the Campus, by reinforcing the sophisticated and urban atmosphere of the place. “The choice of plant species and varieties was crucial. We made sure to allow a multitude of plants to flourish with a more mature bloom.” Thus, a multitude of Rhododendrons will bring a floral touch with white and blue-violet shades to recall the costume of the friendly neighbourhood Spider-Man.

The landscape of Avengers Campus is based on a subtle balance of forms that also includes many evergreen trees from Italy, Germany, the Netherlands and Belgium. In total, no less than forty plant species have been selected to grow alongside the future recruits.
In the same way that Stark Industries has worked to enhance the heritage of the industrial past, combining it with high-tech facilities with a resolutely innovative aesthetic, the landscaping of the site is based on the valorization of the species already present within green spaces enriched with new species. “This superimposition of old and new elements is also found in our work, since as soon as Tony Stark’s plans were announced, we preserved the magnolias that were already on the site of the future Campus and took care of them throughout the construction. We then replanted them around the restaurants and the south entrance to give them a second life, along with new plant species.”
When asked what his favorite detail is, Marc’s eyes turn to the Quinjet, the famous Avengers ship: “We have a beautiful Japanese maple right next to it. It’s a precious, slow-growing tree revered in Japanese culture for the art of bonsai. We chose it specifically for its particular slender architecture that harmoniously fits the Quinjet platform.”
Just like our heroes, plant species also have their imperfections. But when they complement each other and join forces like the Avengers, they unleash their superpowers and put themselves at the service of the Planet. See you this summer to discover the natural side of Avengers Campus!

Om de Stark-faciliteiten van de jaren 40 nieuw leven in te blazen en deze om te vormen tot de langverwachte Avengers Campus-opening deze zomer in Parijs, gaat het niet alleen om het herbestemmen van gebouwen uit het industriële tijdperk en het ontwikkelen van nieuwe technologieën. Vegetatie heeft ook een eigen hoofdrol!
Het ‘groene plan’ voor de Campus is geworteld in het creatieve concept, aangezien landschapsarchitectuur vanaf dag één een topprioriteit is van het creatieve team. Het creëren van een omgeving waarin rekruten gefocust blijven op hun missie, stond centraal om hen het gevoel te geven dat ze gesterkt en klaar waren om samen met de machtigste helden van de aarde in actie te komen. En om dit te bereiken was het essentieel om een balans te vinden tussen architectuur en landschapsarchitectuur.

Om deze uitdaging aan te gaan, deden de teams een beroep op Marc Boulanger, Landscaping Superintendent bij Walt Disney Imagineering Paris, en vertrouwden ze hem een tweeledige missie toe: twee “groene palen” creëren – één bij de ingang en de andere in het midden van de Campus, om hitte-eilanden te bestrijden; en om deel te nemen aan de unieke verhalen van de Campus, door de verfijnde en stedelijke sfeer van de plek te versterken. “De keuze van plantensoorten en -variëteiten was cruciaal. We hebben ervoor gezorgd dat een veelvoud aan planten kan bloeien met een meer volwassen bloei.” Zo zal een veelvoud van Rhododendrons een bloemig tintje geven met witte en blauw-violette tinten om het kostuum van de vriendelijke buurt Spider-Man te herinneren.
Het landschap van Avengers Campus is gebaseerd op een subtiele balans van vormen die ook veel groenblijvende bomen uit Italië, Duitsland, Nederland en België bevat. In totaal zijn er maar liefst veertig plantensoorten geselecteerd om naast de toekomstige rekruten te groeien.
Op dezelfde manier waarop Stark Industries heeft gewerkt om het erfgoed van het industriële verleden te versterken door het te combineren met hoogtechnologische faciliteiten met een resoluut innovatieve esthetiek, is de landschapsarchitectuur van de site gebaseerd op de valorisatie van de soorten die al aanwezig zijn in groene ruimtes verrijkt met nieuwe soorten. “Deze superpositie van oude en nieuwe elementen is ook terug te vinden in ons werk, want zodra de plannen van Tony Stark werden aangekondigd, hebben we de magnolia’s die al op de site van de toekomstige Campus stonden, bewaard en tijdens de bouw verzorgd. We hebben ze toen herplant rond de restaurants en de zuidelijke ingang om ze een tweede leven te geven, samen met nieuwe plantensoorten.”
Op de vraag wat zijn favoriete detail is, gaan Marc’s ogen naar de Quinjet, het beroemde Avengers-schip: “We hebben er een prachtige Japanse esdoorn naast. Het is een kostbare, langzaam groeiende boom die in de Japanse cultuur wordt vereerd voor de kunst van bonsai. We hebben het specifiek gekozen vanwege de bijzondere slanke architectuur die harmonieus past bij het Quinjet-platform.”
