?? You are indeed a composer and lyricist. How did you write this song?
I always start with the lyrics. This is the concept on which I rely to find the right musical atmosphere. So I write a first draft from which I build my music. Then I adjust the different elements as things progress. For a title like “Are You Brave Enough?” it was necessary to find the right balance between a form of lightness and a dark side. Because at Halloween, we have fun, but we have fun scaring ourselves!

Already, the chorus combines great lyrical flights with descending patterns typical of music of this period. But Halloween is also a party full of surprises, and I wanted it to feel in harmony. This is the reason why I have added here and there sequences of chords that we do not necessarily expect, precisely to surprise the listeners. Finally, for rhythm, I wrote a bass line both energetic and dark, which can be declined in different forms, while remaining recognizable.

It was a real challenge to imagine different ways of presenting this song, depending on the places and situations. In “Attention … Méchants !”, the show performed at the Castle Stage, it appears at the end, for the grand finale of Ursula. Since it is a live performance, I treated it in a very theatrical way, as for a musical, writing it so that the Sea Witch can afford to be very exuberant in her interpretation.

?? How did you approach the arrangement of this version?
I started with a pop / rock sound, adding an orchestral dimension so that it fits at best into the musical color of the show. It was the Italian composer Marco Marinangeli, regular contributor to Disneyland Paris, who wrote all the other arrangements and I had access to his demos during the writing process to guide me. For his part, with the complicity of Robert Fienga, Music Senior Manager, he slipped a nod to my theme at the opening, so as to give the public a taste of the finale. Marco and I worked in parallel, then the orchestrator Mike Watts (Tangled, Toy Story 3, The Princess and the Frog) made one last touch to unify perfectly all.

I had started with the version of the show with Ursula. It was particularly entrenched in my mind. It really took me to get away from it to imagine the Tower of Terror’s version. So I plunged into this “swing” atmosphere, with a lot of brass, and I slipped a quote from the theme of The Fourth Dimension to the extent that the clip tells a story that takes place precisely in the attraction.
