The arrival
On Saturday 7 July 2018, it was time for the second themed evening for Annual Passholders at Disneyland Paris. A while ago, this new tradition was started with a themed evening around the 10th anniversary of the Hollywood Tower Hotel at the Walt Disney Studios Park.
Once again, Walt Disney Studios Park was the setting for this Marvel Soirée, where Annual Passholders could now also bring some friends with them.
The evening itself started at 8:30 pm, before you had the same kind of waiting lines as for Disney FanDaze and Electroland. This is fairly comfortable, but the line for the control of the tickets…that was a bigger problem. The line went into Fantasia Gardens so that guests who came in or out of the Disneyland Park were totally blocked. No Cast Member took note of this in order to adjust it.
Goodies
Once you passed the ticket control you came in zig-zag queues to wait until the doors of the Studios opened again. At that time we were treated with some goodies. A beautiful and large pin that was created especially for this evening and also a beautifully printed program of the event.
When seeing the special bags and t-shirts that were used by Cast Members, the expectations were high, as a lot of effort was put into this. At the sight of the program, however, those expectations were quickly scaled back. But maybe there were surprises that were not on the program.
Surprises of the evening
The biggest surprise were the Disney Characters that are totally unrelated to Marvel. Characters from Aladdin, Monsters Inc., Toy Story … could be found in the Toon Studios section of the park.
Unfortunately, these were the only surprises and almost the only fun thing during this themed night.
Marvel Characters?
So no Marvel Characters during a Marvel evening? Yes, of course, 4 Marvel Characters to full the evening. Captain America, Black Widow, Thor & Loki and the latter two were together so there were actually only 3 different meet & greets with the logical consequence: hours-long queues. The Marvel characters were also so shielded or inside that you could not see them or barely if you did not stand in the queue. If the Marvel Characters had just walked through the park or done a meet & greet where you could also see them, this would have given the Marvel theme some strength.
If you did not wanted to wait for hours in the queue, you would not have seen any Marvel character at the end of the evening.
The attractions
At such an evening Disney is always making them strong saying that there are also attractions open, but for Annual Passholders attractions that you can experience all year round are not such a highlight on a special themed night. Yet the attractions were visited but rather out of boredom or out of curiosity because some attractions would be specially adapted for this evening.
So it was mainly looking for the Tower of Terror and the Rock’n’Roller Coaster. Unfortunately, this was again a big disappointment. The Rock’n’Roller Coaster was completely in the dark without any effects or lighting, only other music during the ride. And the Tower of Terror, there was not even music to be heard, even in the lobby, and it was also dark and without effects.
What was good?
Not much but there was a Marvel conference at the Studio Theater. Was fun to go and listen but unfortunately little or no information was given here. I expected to see the concept arts of the Super Heroes Show or stories about the development, anecdotes etc … It was rather an enumeration or rather a promo performance for Marvel in the Disney Parks worldwide with information that we all knew for a long time. Do not forget that the room was filled with Annual Passholders, who are therefore already quite aware of what’s going on in the Disney Parks (Disneyland Paris: Know your audience!) A sad thing too that English had to be translated into French of course …. but if it was in French, it was not translated into English. A chauvinistic attitude that really does not fit in the Number 1 tourist destination of Europe, as they like to call themselves.
Entertainment
Furthermore, there was hardly any entertainment in the park. There was only 1 Dance Party with the Guardians of the Galaxy, not very special as you can see this several times during the day. At least if you are on the first row, otherwise you will not see anything.
The larger stage on the other side of the Production Courtyard remained empty all evening and was only used at the end of the evening to push a DJ on it. Something that is done at all special evenings but that actually added little value to the event, it’s more just to fill the program.
A sad ending
Many people left the park early, many people were angry and disappointed. Many of them went to Studio Services to make their complaints and either received a refund of their ticket or a ticket for the Disney Jazz Soirée.
My suggestions:
- Where were the Marvel Characters like SpiderMan, Dr. Strange, Black Panther or Iron Man?
- Why not a small parade with all the characters in the end like with FanDaze ??
- Why not use the bigger stage?
- Why no effects in Rock’n’Roller Coaster (Red light effects for Iron Man?) ??
- Why no Disney Photo Pass photographers with some Marvel backdrops ??
De aankomst
Zaterdag 7 juli 2018 was het tijd voor de tweede thema-avond voor Jaarpashouders van Disneyland Paris. Een tijdje geleden werd deze nieuwe traditie gestart met een thema-avond rond de 10de verjaardag van de Hollywood Tower Hotel in het Walt Disney Studios Park.
Ook deze keer was het Walt Disney Studios Park opnieuw het decor voor deze Marvel Soirée waarbij jaarpashouders nu ook enkele vrienden konden meenemen.
De avond zelf begon om 20u30, daarvoor was het wachten in lange rijen aan de ingang van het Walt Disney Studios Park, telkens op dezelfde wijze als voor Disney FanDaze en Electroland. Dit loopt redelijk comfortabel is het niet dat er voor de controle van het ticket een lang rij stond die liep tot in Fantasia Gardens waardoor de gasten die in of uit het Disneyland Park kwamen totaal geblokkeerd werden. Geen enkele Cast Member nam daar noties van om dit wat aan te passen.
Goodies
Eens de ticket controle voorbij kwam je in zig-zag wachtrijen en hier was het wachten tot de deuren van de Studios opnieuw open gingen. In die tijd werden we getrakteerd op enkele goodies. Een mooie en vooral grote pin die speciaal voor deze avond werd gecreëerd en ook een mooi gedrukt programma van de avond.
Bij het zien van de speciale zakken en t-shirts die werden gebruikt door de Cast Members waren de verwachtingen hoog, aangezien er hierin al veel moeite werd gestoken. Bij het zien van het programma echter werden die verwachten al snel teruggeschroefd. Maar misschien waren er nog verrassingen die niet op het programma stonden.
Verrassingen van de avond
De grootste verrassing waren de Disney Figuren die totaal niet Marvel gerelateerd zijn. Figuren uit Aladdin, Monsters Inc, Toy Story…waren te vinden in het Toon Studios gedeelte van het park.
Helaas waren dit ook de enige verrassingen en bijna het enige leuke tijdens deze thema-avond.
Marvel Characters ?
Waren er dan geen Marvel figuren tijdens een Marvel avond? Ja natuurlijk, welgeteld 4 Marvel figuren om een volledig avond te vullen. Captain America, Black Widow, Thor & Loki en die laatste twee stonden dan nog samen waardoor er eigenlijk maar 3 verschillende meet & greets waren met het logische gevolg: urenlange wachtrijen. De Marvel characters stonden ook zodanig afgeschermd of binnen dat je ze niet of amper kon zien als je niet in de wachtrij ging staan. Hadden de Marvel figuren eens gewoon door het park gelopen of een meet & greet gedaan waar je ze ook gewoon kon zien, dan had dit het Marvel thema wat kracht bijgegeven.
Had je er geen uren voor over om in de wachtrij te gaan staan, had je dus op het einde van de avond geen enkel Marvel character “gezien”.
De attracties
Bij zo’n avond maakt Disney zich altijd sterk dat er ook attracties open zijn, maar voor jaarpashouders zijn attracties die je het hele jaar kan beleven niet zo’n hoogtepunt op een speciale thema-avond. Toch werden de attracties bezocht maar eerder uit verveling of uit nieuwsgierigheid want enkele attracties zouden voor deze avond speciaal worden aangepast.
Het was dus vooral uitkijken naar de Tower of Terror en de Rock’n’Roller Coaster. Helaas was dit opnieuw een grote teleurstelling. De Rock’n’Roller Coaster was volledig in het donker zonder enige effect of verlichting, enkel andere muziek tijdens de rit. En de Tower of Terror daar was er zelfs geen muziek te horen, zelfs niet in de lobby, en was het ook donker en zonder effecten.
Wat was er dan wel goed?
Niet veel maar er was wel nog een Marvel conferentie in het Studio Theater. Was leuk om eens te gaan luisteren maar helaas werd hier eigenlijk weinig tot geen informatie gegeven. Ik had verwacht concept-arts te zien van de Super Heroes Show of verhalen over de ontwikkeling, anekdotes enz… Het was eerder een opsomming of liever een promo opvoering voor Marvel in de Disney Parken wereldwijd met informatie die wij allemaal al lang wisten. Vergeet niet dat de zaal gevuld was met Jaarpashouders, die dus toch al redelijk op de hoogte zijn van wat er in de Disney Parken speelt (Disneyland Paris: Know your audience !) Een spijtige zaak ook dat het Engels natuurlijk naar het Frans moest worden vertaald….maar als het inééns in het Frans was werd het niet in het Engels vertaald. Een chauvinistische houding die echt niet past in de Nummer 1 toeristische bestemming van Europa, zoals ze zichzelf zo graag noemen.
Entertainment
Verder was er amper entertainment te beleven in het park. Er was slechts 1 Dance Party met de Guardians of the Galaxy, weinig speciaal aangezien je dit ook tijdens de dag meermaals kan zien. Tenminste als je op de eerste rij staat, anders zie je niets.
Het grotere podium aan de andere kant van de Production Courtyard bleef de hele avond leeg en werd enkel gebruikt op het einde van de avond om er nog een DJ op te duwen. Iets wat bij alle speciale avonden wordt gedaan maar die eigenlijk weinig meerwaarde biedt aan het event, het is eerder een programmavuller.
Een triest einde
Veel mensen verlieten reeds vroeg het park, vele mensen waren boos en teleurgesteld. Velen van hen gingen richting Studio Services om hun klachten hoorbaar te maken en kregen ofwel een terugbetaling van hun ticket of een ticket voor de Disney Jazz Soirée.
Mijn suggesties:
- Waar waren de Marvel Characters zoals SpiderMan, Dr. Strange, Black Panther of Iron Man ??
- Waarom geen kleine parade met alle figuren op het einde zoals bij FanDaze ??
- Waarom geen gebruik van het grotere podium ??
- Waarom geen effecten in Rock’n’Roller Coaster (Rode lichteffecten voor Iron Man?) ??
- Waarom geen Disney Photo Pass fotografen met enkele Marvel backdrops ??
